On March 11 2011, we have all been struck by the devastation of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that affected Japan. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been, and continues to be, affected by the impact of these twin events.

Shinnpark will donate 100% of the net proceeds of this shipment of ‘The P-Hook Bookmark Set’ to the Singapore Red Cross Society. With your help, we hope to raise S$2000 for the victims of this terrible tragedy. Also, we are relieved to hear from Mr Itosaki that he is safe in Osaka.

I quickly swung it to the front and check the sides. There is a sharp vertical opening measuring 25cm at the side. I have been robbed, ALL of my money. I stood there in a daze and was in a complete BLANK for a split second. Almost immediately I ran out of the shop, screaming and running over towards my dearest Mom because she was standing at the same spot where I used to stand, waiting for us. Just last weekend, we were in Pratunam Market (Bangkok, Thailand), which was located just beside our hotel.

My sister hurriedly ran along and quickly check Mom’s bag.

“I’m ok, and my bag is fine too,” Mum reassured us, pressing her shoulder bag close to her body. She was SO wrong.

As we inspect the sides of her bag, a 15cm cut appeared at the sides of her black shoulder bag. It seems that a razor sharp tool have been used to cut open my mum’s bag. Her bag is made of extremely good quality fabric and comes with double layered cotton lining. My sister and Mom’s wallets are gone too. Mom face started to pale. My eyes started to well up with tears.

We hugged around each other and quickly get out of the place and headed back to the hotel. When we were back in the hotel lobby, we reported the terrible incident immediately to the hotel manager. At the same time, I calmed down and quickly made a phone call to the banks to cancel my credit cards. Staying in a reputable hotel, helps ALOT. The manager reassured us that we are safe in the hotel and offered to accompany us to the nearest police station to file for a police report.

After making the police report, the police officers showed us tons of photo albums filled with faces of innocently-looking faces. There were so MANY of them. They are in all ages, old and young and I tell you, some of them looked so frail and weak, especially the elderly!!! that you won’t even have the slightest idea that they could be professional pickpockets! By the way Mom remembered vividly that she saw a pretty-looking lady smiling at her when she turned her back (she felt a tug) before hearing my scream. And the next moment, that lady disappeared. Probably, they have been standing around me and signal the rest to stage as ‘crowd’ and squeeze with us! I would think that pickpockets are HYENAs. They would single out the weaker prey (standing alone in our case) A few pushes and bumps, your money is gone. Also, I would like to highlight that I was not flashing jewelry or carrying expensive bags. I was standing alone, out in the open and that made me a target for pickpockets.

I am so thankful that none of us were hurt in this terrible incident (especially dearest Mom) and that we still had some cash, and our passports in the hotel safe box. When we returned to the hotel after making the police report, we were told that another guest were also robbed and had happened not long after ours, in Platinum Shopping Mall, located just opposite our hotel.

The Aftermath : All I can say is that no matter how well-prepared you are, you are definitely not a match for these professional robbers. They are hungry and they will do anything to get the money. Please do not fight it out if someone snatches your wallet. Thinking back, am glad that I did not witness the pickpocketing taking place. Knowing me, I would have screamed and fight it all out for my hard-earned money. I could have been hurt or worst, lose a hand or limb!

Here are some of my thoughts that I could share, on how you could better prepare yourself and hopefully prevent such terrible incidents:

• Travel and move closely in a group : You could watch out for each others’ backs.
  
• Go bag-free if possible (I know; its darn difficult, especially for ladies) in crowded places. If you insist, bring along your camera bag and stash some cash in every corner.
  
• Stay extremely alert. Never ever be distracted by old folks asking for your help or young children tugging your pants.
• Stay in a reputable hotel with reasonable rates. In this case, we stayed in Amari Watergate. The staff have been very helpful and reassuring.
• Buy insurance : You probably can get some claims, in the event if such incident happens.
• Never bring your entire fortune out. If you must, hide them in different spots in your shorts, wherever.
  In this case, I was extremely unlucky because I had originally wanted to change more money for our meals for the next couple of days.

Listening attentively to our story, the police officers marked the exact location and headed straight to the location. I really hope they could nab these “hyenas”.  Although we are safe and we had our passports to go home, I simply could not even sleep at night following the incident. I am sure that there are people who have lost their passports and had to stay over for a long while before returning home.

We were indeed very lucky, compared to others.

For you who are traveling soon, enjoy a good trip and please, have a safe return home.

Although you won’t be able to find authentic Hong Kong Milk Tea in Starbucks but I’m pretty sure that you’ll love its “Bing Sutt” corner, a place where locals go for fresh coffee. Located only in the southwest corner of Duddell Street, Central District, you would have thought that it looks just like a cookie-cutter chain store you’ve seen around the world. Follow on.

I love climbing the stairs, especially to places leading you to another space where you explore and get surprised!

The ‘Bing Sutt’ has long remember as a place where people can go to feel connected to each other. Although it literally means “ice room”, it was actually the coffeehouse back in the 1950′s through to the 1970′s. Coffee, tea and iced beverages or trendy Western treats such as soda pop and ice-cream were served. The bing sutt was a fusion of Eastern traditions and Western modernization.

The location was chosen because of its relationship with the arts community and its a place to feel inspired, creative and connected to each other through simple goodness of your favorite drink and the feel good neighborhood spot. The atmosphere here is simply amazing — timeless yet inviting! It is as good as the beverages served (make sure you get a good dose of caffeine)

When we arrived at the entrance of the Mira Hotel, we were greeted with the plain, black mirrored glass door. Simply put, the unassuming exterior design looks just like an entrance of a shopping center. Step in and you’ll be amazed with its sexy fin-like structure in monochrome palette, beautiful chandelier and stylish furnishings.

Wait. Inhale. The scent delivers a light yet burst of ripe lemons and citrus floras. This is definitely something very memorable about the Mira. LOVE IT!

Thanks to the lovely folks from Hong Kong Tourism Board, we will be staying at The Mira Hotel, located in the upscale and vibrant Tsim Sha Tsui.  Having emerged from a facelift and a US65m (SGD 90m) makeover, it was newly opened in September 2009.

When I am not busy with orders and keeping the plants alive, I’ve always longed for a backpack adventure — the kind which you would meet new found mates trekking on a rugged terrain.

Through a strange twist of fate, I found myself embarking on a Bathtub Quest, alongside with the other 9 bloggers for the Hong Kong Summer Adventure. As you may have known, Shinnpark.com have been awarded the Best e-Commerce Blog in the second year! Thanks to omy.sg and the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), we’ve got a chance of a lifetime to experience the exciting Hong Kong Dragon Boat Carnival with its fantastic dragon boat action, great food and tons of drinks along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront from 23-25 July 2010 with air and hotel accommodation! And on top of this, a few of us will be getting an awesome makeover by famous Hong Kong stylist, Celia Wong!

The Official First Meet-up

Just before the meet-up, I was brimming with excitement (I just can’t stop smiling!) and couldn’t wait to meet everyone on-board. Everyone was… so proper and flashing polite smiles. Okay, although there may be a few awkward ‘you-can-hear-the-aircon’ moments, Darren was really the cool ice-breaker. If not for his spontaneity, we won’t have this first group photo!

Although we came from all walks of life, we had one thing in common. Blogging with passion! When we mingle a little, the feeling came instantly to me like, pen-pals (except we don’t write to each other, haha) There was this odd sense of nostalgia and familiarity.

A punctured tyre, a huge storm and a crying baby. All this happened just before arriving at the Sgblogawards at St James, Movida.

Well, my day could not have been better. Just last night, Shinnpark have bagged the Best e-Commerce Blog at the Sgblogawards 2010. Another blessed year.

I must admit this year was definitely more competitive, with more well-presented and interesting blogshops. It was also an interesting observation to see how blogshops have evolved over the past years.

Shinnpark was born with a pure love for fashion and gifts, and with an intention to add a little spice into a life of a shopaholic. Thank you for your continued patronage and support!
